A chuck is a specialized type of clamp used to hold an object with radial symmetry, especially a cylinder. In a drill, a mill and a transmission, a chuck holds the rotating tool; in a lathe, it holds the rotating workpiece.
10mm (3/8 inch) is the first standard size. These have a smaller chuck and are less powerful than those with a bigger chuck. To make up for this, they are usually more cheap than other drills. 13mm, or 1/2 inch, is the next common size. These are often larger, more professional drills.
Loosen the chuck (the black circular section on the front of the drill) by twisting it counterclockwise to widen the diameter of the jaws that clamp onto the drill bit. Insert the shank (smooth part) of the drill bit into the jaws, and re-tighten the chuck until the drill bit is secured.

In a reciprocating engine, the dead centre is the position of a piston in which it is either farthest from, or nearest to, the crankshaft. The former is known as top dead centre (TDC) while the latter is known as bottom dead centre (BDC).
A dead center (one that does not turn freely, i.e., dead) may be used to support the workpiece at either the fixed or rotating end of the machine. When used in the fixed position, a dead center produces friction between the workpiece and center, due to the rotation of the workpiece.

A drill sleeve, also known as a reduction sleeve, is a tapered, hollow steel shaft that fits the tapered shank of a cutting tool to adapt it to a drill press spindle. Drill sleeves are used when the drill shank is smaller than the machine spindle hole. They can also be used to extend the length of the drill and change the taper of the connective arbors.
